<image:caption>"The Peering Woman": “The Peering Woman” features an innocuous glance from a mysterious woman, with a dramatic Hollywood lighting. I wanted to capture the moment when someone turns their head, and the curiosity that simple glance can give. A snapshot in time. A momentary look. The beauty of the work comes from the ambiguity and short lived nature when you lock eyes with someone - Cathy Gao</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Little House in the Woods" - Helen Hoang Once upon a time, somewhere in the middle of the woods lies a little house, made of a lotus flower, a symbol of peace and tranquility. Smoke comes out of the petal chimney. The house seems warm and cozy. But who lives there?</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Faith" - Isabella Burns Inspired by the vanitas style of paintings, I wanted to explore the certainty of death, even in the most faithful and devoted. Our comforts are nothing but that - comforts. In the end, we all meet the same fate.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Atlantic Mackerel (A Blue Roof)" - Anna Kim When I was doing my new year's cleaning, I wanted to reuse my old calendar and ripped out a print of Paul Gauguin's A Blue Roof and glued pieces together to create my collage. I picked Atlantic Mackerel as my subject because I eat it with my family when I go to my grandparents' house during the holidays. Even though the subject matter may seem simple, the people and story behind it made the art special; it mirrors the treasured memories I made with my family in 2024.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Issue V</image:title>
<image:caption>"It's worth it" - Isabel Jung My passion for painting and my ability to capture a moment on canvas came to life in this acrylic piece. Hiking through Arches National Park at a young age taught me that no matter how exhausting or challenging the journey, the final view is always worth it. Without regret, every step of the process proves meaningful. Whenever I face difficulties in my own journey, I remind myself not to feel discouraged because I know the effort will pay off in the end. I hope my painting serves as a reminder that the view at the finish line will always be worth the hard work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Emotional Spectrum" - Emilia Park Through a diverse pool of vivid colors and patterns, this piece expresses many different emotions one experience as an artist. It sometimes feels as if there are limitless ideas inside your head and it feels overwhelming to organize and accommodate them into a single work. <image:caption>"Deafening Silence" - A.R. This piece is meant to be a social commentary open to interpretation and meant to showcase the influence of media and others upon our opinions of the political, social, and economical state of the world. I originally got this idea when seeing the protests outside school and the kind of emotion I felt partaking in it. It felt like a fire of our generation and a sort of frustration that I want to express to anyone that will read. I hope you truly do put your device down and consider who you are on this earth and what a vast change you can make.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Issue VI</image:title>
<image:caption>"Chinese Food Mandala" - Caroline Hou Mandalas play a significant role in Buddhist traditions and culture. They originated in India before spreading to East Asia due to cultural exchange. Traditionally, mandalas serve as spiritual and sacred tools for meditation, focus, and healing. Today, they're created by people all around the world, whether for their religious importance or for their aesthetically pleasing beauty. For this piece, I wanted to create an unexpected mandala in the form of a porcelain plate of Chinese food. When one thinks of mandalas, the first thing that will come in mind is an intricate flowery pattern. However, mandalas aren't limited to only representing sacred or floral symbols; harmony and peace can exist in daily life-- anywhere and everywhere. This mandala includes shrimp, fried dumplings and buns, and a mooncake. Mooncakes themselves have mandalas on them, so I found that including one in the center would create a mandala-in-a-mandala. Or one single big mandala. I was inspired to create this piece by the recently celebrated annual Chinese Lunar New Year. During this time, themes of peace, unity and harmony are emphasized, so I hope my art will offer a glimpse into the values, warmth, and cultural significance of this holiday. The color palette for this piece was created with the films of Studio Ghibli in mind, due to my love for them and their art style. The both comforting and nostalgic colors and textures gives the food a visually rich feel that makes it seem real-- and delicious. This is a mixed-media piece. I started with watercolor to establish base colors and each element's general composition, before going back in with gouache to intensify the colors. Lastly, I used Chinese black ink to create a background to further give the plate of food depth and vibrancy. Whether interpreted as cultural, realistic, or just appetizing, I hope this mandala will leave viewers with a sense of warmth, peace, and positivity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Issue VI</image:title>
<image:caption>"California Golden Trout" - Shinjan Sutar This painting depicts a California golden trout surrounded by a deep blue, star-filled background. I chose to highlight the warm orange and gold tones of the trout to emphasize its beauty and uniqueness as a native species of California. The bright stars and bold blue background create contrast and help the fish stand out, almost as if it is floating in a dreamlike space. I wanted the piece to feel both natural and imaginative, blending realistic details with a more playful and creative setting. By outlining the fish in white and adding delicate patterns and textures, I focused on capturing the trout’s distinctive features. Overall, this artwork celebrates the elegance of aquatic life and encourages viewers to appreciate the diversity and beauty found in nature.</image:caption>

<image:caption>mountain tops, wise conversations, and unfolding cosmos - Simone Pereira // Oftentimes I listen to a particular song when sketching the initial concept. When sketching this, I listened to Bruno Major's "I'll Sleep When I'm Older" which is a gorgeous piece. The song narrates the passion for adventure. During quarantine, it was harder for me to grasp that sort of wonder in the world. Being trapped at home, I lost the fire to explore and live life. The one thing that helped me get through it was my art. The scenes I draw offer me a form of escapism into new worlds. This piece is a window into my mind and the places my mind has traveled. Just because I am stuck in one spot doesn't mean that I can't continue to uncover new destinations.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Skull - Afreen Shameem // In my Art 3 class, I had to draw a skull head image from the real-life reference skull (made of plastic) that my teacher had in class. I looked at it from different angles to capture as much of the skull as I could and changed my pencil strokes to show texture and depth. I drew the shoulder and hair of a girl to relate the picture to myself and added a bird to contrast the skull's dreariness with cheerfulness and hope.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A skeleton knows - Auguste McDaniel // The image above depicts a blue toned skeleton with white highlights, with an exposed brain region, sitting behind a dark green background. The image represents the knowledge and intelligence one possesses before death, knowledge we carry onto the great beyond. A skeleton knows indeed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Issue II</image:title>
<image:caption>Endangered - Afreen Shameem // This piece represents the ecological changes happening due to climate change. In the left corner, I highlight the effects of coral bleaching by contrasting the vibrancy of healthy coral to the dreariness of dead coral. On the right side, the stump and dead bush show that deforestation and extreme weather conditions have killed vegetation. The homes of polar bears and penguins are endangered since ice caps are melting; so, I showed the animals to be dying by melting. Even though the gorilla's home is not melting, it is still being lost to deforestation and for consistency, I drew the gorilla melting as well. Finally, the human (me), is telling these animals to "please stay" and preserve earth's biodiversity. However, it is too late, and all she can do is beg. I made this piece to draw attention to the urgency of the climate crisis and show the consequences of inaction.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Issue II</image:title>
<image:caption>The Comforting Child in Us - Larissa Hom // I wanted to express the feeling of nostalgia that comes with your favorite comfort foods. Although we are all growing older every day, we often still have that child in us that gets excited over our favorite foods. Throughout life, our taste buds change, and it is interesting to explore how we can end up loving the things we loathe to try as children. We are also more willing to try foods as we grow and discover our tastes and preferences. To express this sense of happiness and warmth, I drew my uncle, Paul, enjoying one of his favorite foods, my auntie's spaghetti. Therefore, I called the piece The Comforting Child in Us. To experiment, I wanted to see how I can work with various angles and perspectives to emphasize the food. I used oil on canvas to portray the warmth and love my uncle feels through eating the noodles. Full artist's statement linked.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Absurdity - Amy // Pictured in my piece is a person made up of multicolored triangles. This is meant to symbolize the philosophical concept of absurdity, in which the meaning in our lives only exists because we choose to see it. In my piece, the image is fragmented into pieces which only become visible as a person because we, as humans, see the linkage between them.</image:caption>
