Reality

R. A. P.

The darkness engulfs all corners of the alley. The rain has finally stopped and water droplets from the roofs dot the nasty cement floor that’s likely been puked on for years now. I’m sitting at the side, cradling my dear baby in my arms as she sleeps peacefully with the blanket wrapped around her. I stare blankly at the puddle of water near me. If I were still a child, I would’ve gotten my rain boots to play in it, no matter how disgusting it was. I likely wouldn’t have even cared for this predicament in the first place. If only I had kept my innocence, if only I hadn’t met that damn, charming fool, I wouldn’t be here.

But I wouldn’t have had Rosa. Rosa, my lovely daughter, the only one who makes all the sleepless nights worth it. I’ll get out of this. We both will make it out. She’ll go to school like all the other kids. She won’t be robbed of the childhood like I was. I’ll work hard just for her.

I watch the sunlight rise past the buildings, finally emitting light to the darkest of places. I stand up shakily and bask in the light, taking in the warmth after such a cold night. It’s another day; time to check out the “Help Wanted” poster.
